Where I'm At With Panel 3

I love the look of the bottom line of photos. Used David Carson as an artist model. I played with focus, having Logan and the background in and out of focus. Also the layout of the photos mimic how Carson presents his photos.  

Im still unsure of the second line of photos, and potentially I might take them out. 

I plan to look at installation art and incorporate the blanket and the pegs, as I have used them throughout my folio. I want to show human presence without Logan physically being in the shots, similar to the ones in the first line on my panel 3.

I decided to start playing with focus in my panel 3. I find it really hard because I am such a perfectionist, but Im getting there.

These are my latest photos for the start of panel 3,  I used the idea of Human Presence Implied in the photos without Logan, with the blanket in motion it makes it seem like there is someone in the shot, but really there isn't. 

Identifying Each Series of Work - Panel 1

This is identifying each series of work, and working out there relevance in my folio.

1. For the first circled group this uses apeture and focus to show the fight of the depression. The shaking of the face shows how the mind can go crazy from depression.

2. The next series of photos are close ups of the face. These pictures show expression of how one can act with a crazy mind. The strong shadows show darkness. The awkwardness of the face represents the mind. 

3. The next 4 photos shows the black blanket as symbolism of the pain and depression, and how its waying him down. 

4. The last photos show clenched fists which represent the punching, and the feeling of blood pumping (veins) and feeling under pressure. 

Arjan Benning Face and Ear Shots

These shots are the next line of my panel 2, meaning I just need to finish the last of my panel next, maybe with photos with an open space, going back to the Sequencing style of shooting. Also maybe using white clothing to show innocence, and freedom, to show contrast and difference to the other photos.

Arjan Benning

Arjan Beening is a directive photographer who stages his photos to amaze. He has won multiple awards.
I'm looking at using his techniques with the small brown pegs, and using them around the neck, face and hands. I think this will go with the theme of creepiness on my board and using the body in odd ways.

Walead Beshty - Research

Walead Beshty is an London born photographer but is based in Los Angeles.

Beshty earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bard College, then went on to get a Master of Fine Arts at Yale. His first solo exhibition was in New York in 2004 which was successful.

I am looking at his work, ''The Phenomenogy of Shopping and Dead Malls'' which is situated at Contemporary Art Centre, Long Island City, NY. 

I really like how these are so weird and unusual and I think the concept of putting the body in awkward situations kind of fits in with the rest of my work. I want to try this with Logan but put him under the blanket, to still keep the dark theme coming through. I tried to take some like on my latest post, but I didn't like the look if them, so I am going to try it again using different lighting and in a different setting.

Worksheet

1. My work is about the struggle of being in a dark state of mind. The blanket represents the pain and pressure from society to be the best. I want to develop this further with Logan breaking about of the blanket, and showing him as an individual, with the blanket standing next to him, side by side they work, but one cannot try and take over another.

Planning My Next Shoot - Walead Beshty

This is the plan for my next shoot. I'm looking at Walead Beshty who uses models with thier faces and bodies places sunkin in into objects. As I am using the blanket for a prop, I was thinking about trying this concept with Logan and the blanket.

Latest Shoot + Proof Sheet

I re-took the latest photos, and I prefer these ones a lot. I've used Duane Michals and Kellp Nipper, also with references to David Hilliard and Eadweard Muybridge. These photos use sequences and stick to the high contrast and difference between the darker and lighter pictures.

Plan for Next Shoot

This is the plan for my next shoot, using Duane Michals and Kelly Nipper as artist models. I want to use sequences and series as a techinique in the photographs. I want this to be at the bottom of my panel 1. I've tried to take these before and it was becoming to hard to edit in photo shop, so I'm trying again. This was my first attempt, but I've struggled to take away the harsh lines.

Artist Model Research - Duane Michals

Duane Michals is an American photographer, who uses slow shutter speed and sequences to show philosophy and emotion. He also uses series and multi-exposure in an innovative form. Michals began his work in the 60's where he was inspired by photojournalism and wanted to communicate and show narratives in photo form. He did this by using 'frame by frame' layout, also in a grid format. Michals uses text throughout his images to title a piece of work or the person in it and to push a statement across to the viewer.
Michals work has been exhibited in many exhibitions in the last 50 years, including The Museum of Modern Art-New York, Odakyu Museum-Tokyo, International Center of Photography-New York, Thessaloniki Museum of Photography-Greece.


In this picture below Michals uses the grid, frame by frame format to position the photos. He uses text to Title the photo with the models name and the year in which the photo was taken. He uses black and white to show the strong contrats between the colours. this also shows alot of positive space, with the background, his hair, and skin being lighter than the rest of the photo. Making these areas of the photos really light makes the darkness in his eyes and mouth really stand out. Also his photos are very symmetrical and even, where the object or person is placed in the same place in all three photos, but still manages to show movement.

               

I have used his techniques of slowing down shutter speed and creating movement in a still photograph. By my strong use of positive space, show similarities in my work and the techniques of Michals. I've decided to not use black and white in my photography as I dont like the look of it. 

Latest Shoot - Duane Michals and Eileen Cowan

This is my latest shoot. I've used Logan with a plain black top on and a light background to make the photos look of high contrast and harshness. 

I really think using an all white background is a contrast in what i have done in the rest of my work, where I have used black and negative space. I think these relate well with Eileen Cowan's work as my photos are showing high and obvious contrast between positive and negative space.

Duane Michals uses slowed down shutter speed quite prominently in his work which is the technique i was experimenting with in these photos. I want to develop this further and go back to my original idea of using sequences in panel 1.
